Periodontics Treatments

Periodontal gum disease is a common, and preventable, gum infection that causes harm to your gums and bone. Nearly 50% of Americans over the age of 30 suffer from periodontal disease according to a study by the CDC. The infection is a result of poor dental hygiene and untreated gingivitis. Without treatment, periodontal disease can result in tooth loss and deterioration of the gums.

Symptoms of Periodontitis

  • Swollen, red gums
  • Tenderness
  • Loose or sensitive teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding
  • Receding Gums

Periodontal Disease Treatment

The first step your hygienist will take to get rid of the infection is an in-depth cleaning of your teeth and roots. This involves cleaning the pockets around the teeth, smoothing rough spots and scaling away plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. If the periodontal disease is advanced, you may need a periodontist to fix it.

Periodontal Disease Aftercare

A few weeks after the scaling procedure, a follow-up appointment may be scheduled so your dentist can see how your gums have healed. This also means maintaining regular dental cleanings. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter medication. To prevent periodontal disease from progressing, it’s important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day.
